What to Read While We Wait for Widow's Bay S2
Well, I fucking loved it. This show is an instant all-time favorite and I just added it to my mental list of Best Season 1’s ever
My Heart is a Chainsaw Trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones- If your favorite character is Patricia-the Indian Lake Trilogy is a final girl trilogy with a lovable outcast against all kinds of horrors, humor + heart in a small town
Bones of Our Stars, Blood of Our Stars by Cullen Bunn (on my TBR)-the local sheriff is out of his league fighting ancient evil, human monsters, and ritualistic terrors in a small town on an island.
When Things Get Dark edited by Ellen Datlow-a variety of talented horror authors pay tribute to Shirley Jackson with uncanny, supernatural, strange stories-humor + heart + horror
Nowhere by Allison Gunn-supernatural event, folk horror and ritual, large small town cast of interesting characters, pretty scary and gruesome.
Edenville by Sam Rebelein-horror + humor in a small town with a haunted history and a cast of likable characters trying to survive supernatural/cosmic events.
I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir- isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, a small town mystery, lovable characters, paranormal activity, and deadly secrets.
Goblin by Josh Malerman-a small town called Goblin, six novella length stories connected by one supernatural location where strange things happen.
HEX by Thomas Olde Heuvelt-this gives you the small town horror, cursed town, trapped characters, folk horror, and gruesome scenes of terror.
Dead Eleven by Jimmy Juliano-an island community with a haunted mythology and weird rules & rituals-one woman must solve a mystery before the sinister island claims her forever.
Storm of the Century by Stephen King-this doesn’t have the charm or humor but it does have an ensemble cast, tight knit community of townspeople and a supernatural event during a storm on an island.
I love how Widow’s Bay had every single element of horror I love:
-Small town
-Large ensemble cast of lovable characters I could invest in (complex characters/dialogue/backstory/power dynamics)
-Ancient evil and cursed lineage
-Horror with Humor & Heart
-Folk horror
-Slasher horror
-Final Girl tropes
-Gruesome scares
-Supernatural/Paranormal elements
-Isolation (island community) Horror
-High stakes
-Mystery
-Found Family-band of survivors

I watched Widow’s Bay based on your recommendation a few weeks ago, and I loved it!
So naturally today I picked up “My Heart is a Chainsaw” and I’m looking forward to diving in!
Fantastic show. I’m excited to see where it goes in season 2. Not horror at all, but Rooster is the best thing I’ve seen in recent memory.
