I have a lot of feelings about what the Musk Rat has done to Twitter. It doesn’t mean I love the platform but I was making the most out of the time I spent using the app to curate content and grow an audience. Now, I can’t even do that without feeling like I’m contributing to the Musk Rat Shit Show Circus. I’m not enjoying my Twitter experience and with an election cycle coming up, it won’t get better. No way. Soon, I will likely leave a pinned Tweet, board up the windows, and venture away from that landscape.
I signed up for BluSky through an invite from an author I admire.
I don’t have high hopes for this. It feels exactly like Twitter and users are behaving the same way. I don’t need/want a replica of Twitter. Plus, it’s hard to walk away from a 33K follower account and not feel like I’m starting from scratch. In fact, the very idea exhausts me. It’s not even about followers or likes or engagement, it’s just the whole “starting all over” thing. Like moving from a house you’ve been in for decades, where you know all the neighbors, into an apartment with nothing in it in a new city.
I’m not even interested in the other ones Mastodon Social, Spoutible
But I am interested in Instagram Threads
“Say more with Threads — Instagram’s text-based conversation app
Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.”
But Threads could have a leg up, since it directly ports over your Instagram followers and following lists. Instead of rebuilding a community from scratch, Threads users will already have their existing Instagram circles there from the get-go.
This. This right here. I have had a dedicated bookish account for 7+ years with a significant, curated audience who are there for the BOOKS. It is my home base and this is the basket where I will put more eggs. So I’m glad I have a placeholder account at BluSky so I can keep an eye on how it evolves in case Threads is problematic, but my hope lies in this new app dropping on the 6th that’s already tied to my existing account. I’m looking forward to doing whatever I can to cultivate a community where I already feel at home.

I’m really not surprised that early impressions are it feels like twitter and users behave the same way, Twitter was good for a while but as social media blew up, it became all about engagement, and one thing I’ve been saying for years is negativity spurs engagement. I could sing praises of people all day and nobody cares but if I were to tweet something toxic it would be the talk of the town for a week. I stopped paying attention to notes because it started seeming like twitter. I’ll stick with groups on FB, I suppose
I swear you and I are mentally linked--I had the same damn thought this morning reading about Threads. I don’t want to rebuild a new Twitter (BlueSky) but I’ll probably try Threads. Wish I would have spent more time building my Insta, but live and learn. You’re stuck with me wherever you go btw 🤣🖤
