Sadie's Curated List of Anticipated Books: Gothic & Horromantasy
Bookmark these for future reference, you don't want to miss out!
One of my favorite hobbies is book research. I love browsing my usual haunts searching for books in my current favorite flavor. Right now & for the indefinite foreseeable future, it’s Gothic & Horromantasy
Blood on Her Tongue by Johanna Van Veen- I loved the audiobook of My Darling Dreadful Thing. Both the ebook & the audiobook are on hoopla. I have a physical arc of this and I cannot wait but I kind of want to wait for the audiobook because I loved my experience so much with the debut…decisions, decisions
The Ghost Woods by C. J. Cooke- I read the UK edition and LOVED it. Honestly, the UK cover is iconic so I’m glad I own it but I’m also pleased this book will be readily available here
The Estate by Sarah Jost- “Filled with magic, suspense, the allure of Arthurian legend, and dark academia”
Estella’s Revenge: The Fearless Daughter of Great Expectations by Barbara Havelocke- “You know Miss Havisham, the world's most famous jilted bride. This is her daughter's story.” I’m all over this one.
We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough- “a haunting Gothic novel about a house--and a marriage--gone terribly wrong.” Are you kidding me? A favorite horror/thriller author doing a Gothic?? I need.
The Birdcage Library by Freya Berry- “Spanning Gilded Age New York society to the 1930s Scottish Highlands, this gothic novel is a mystery within a mystery, featuring a compelling heroine, an engrossing puzzle with fiendish clues, and not one but three big twists.”
Beneath the Poet’s House by Christa Carmen- I loved The Daughters of Block Island, so eager to read my ARC “For a grieving writer, the secrets of the past and present converge in a novel of gripping psychological suspense from the author of The Daughters of Block Island.”
The Crimson Road by A.G. Slatter- “A captivating dark gothic fantasy set in the same universe as the award-winning author's All The Murmuring Bones, The Path of Thorns, and The Briar Book of the Dead. A tale of vampires, assassins, ancient witches, and broken promises” The way I am OBSESSED with Slatter’s Sourdough Universe of standalone novels is LIFE. It’s all I can think about right now. After just reading, The Path of Thorns and 25% into The Brian Book of the Dead, I am officially a Slatter Stan Account. You can listen to a few of the audiobooks FREE with your Audible subscription or on hoopla!
The Resurrectionist by A. Rae Dunlap- “a decadently macabre, dark and twisty gothic debut set in 19th century Scotland - when real-life serial killers Burke and Hare terrorized the streets of Edinburgh - as a young medical student is lured into the illicit underworld of body snatching.”
Of Beasts and Fowls by Pilar Adon, translated by Katie Whittemore- “A funerary poem about a bird flying underground; a psychodrama of two sisters drowning in the mirror of memory; a center of a necrophilic labyrinth; Virginia Woolf's Rhoda lost in John Hawkes's Travesty. Pilar Adon's novel is the most haunting I have read in years."--Mircea Cărtărescu
The Secret of the Three Fates by Jess Armstrong- “Following the atmospheric and award-winning gothic historical mystery debut, The Curse of Penryth Hall, USA Today bestselling author Jess Armstrong's heroine, Ruby Vaughn, returns in The Secret of the Three Fates, where the Scottish Hills hold ghosts of the past that threaten Ruby's present.” I really need to finish my audiobook of The Curse of Penryth Hall. My library copy expired. But, it’s on hoopla so no wait time!
Honeysuckle and Bone by Trisha Tobias- “On the run from her own dark secrets, a teen girl becomes the nanny for a prestigious family on their Jamaican estate, where she quickly discovers even paradise may be haunted.” I cannot wait to read this one! I love Gothic debuts
The Wood at Midwinter by Susanna Clarke- “From the internationally bestselling and prize-winning author of Piranesi and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an enchanting, beautifully illustrated short story set in the world of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.” Will I buy this for my Christmas TBR? Yes.
At the Bottom of the Garden by Carmilla Bruce- “A murderess becomes the guardian of two very unusual girls in this mesmerizing gothic novel from acclaimed author Camilla Bruce.” This one sounds so compelling!
Sundown in San Otuela by M. M. Olivas- “When the death of her aunt brings Liz Remolina back to San Ojuela, the prospect fills her with dread. The isolated desert town was the site of a harrowing childhood accident that left her clairvoyant, the companion of wraiths and ghosts. Yet it may also hold the secret to making peace with a dark family history and a complicated personal and cultural identity. Setting out on the train with her younger sister Mary in tow, she soon finds herself hemmed in by a desolate landscape where monsters and ancient gods stalk the night. She's relieved at first to find that her childhood best friend Julian still lives in San Ojuela, but soon realizes that he too is changed. Haunted. Yet she'll have no other choice than to seek out his help as the darkness closes in.”
