Old habits die hard. Checking social media first thing in the morning was the first to go this year. Instead, I wake up very early in the morning and start my day by reading. There is nothing like a cup of coffee, a quiet house, and a good book. I look forward to my mornings.
Some of the books I’ve read recently are game-changers. LIFE changers. WHALEFALL by Daniel Kraus, THE MASSACRE AT YELLOW HILL, and WILD SPACES by S. L. Coney, emotionally affected me to the point of physical response—real sadness & heartache, empathy, love for fictional characters…god, I love it! Some were not very great and I still will write up a response to those on Goodreads because I think that’s important in order to lead by example—speaking my truth about my bookish experiences without fear or hesitation. I want to help people communicate what they loved and didn’t love about the books they’re reading. Because that’s real.
I have Patreon & This Substack helping me stay focused on the mission. Keeping me away from distractions like the all-day glow of the Twitter dumpster fire
I’ve simplified my Instagram too. I turned off the vanity numbers, I hid the like count for other accounts from myself and I hide the number of likes on my posts too. I FUCKING LOVE IT! It’s so liberating. I no longer care how a post is performing. Or how well everyone else’s posts are doing either. Fuck vanity numbers. Go to hell. I’ll post what I want and what I post are simple photos of books that take the least amount of effort on my part but the content is still quality. Just me fangirling about horror books day in and day out and that’s what people are there for anyway.
Every week on Tuesdays, I talk about new books. I wish everyone a happy book release everywhere to promote horror but privately, I unpack these books on Patreon.
We announced our Night Worms May 2023 Theme, Fables & Folklore
Author Brian Allen Carr sent me his books and this cool tote and again, I’m super thankful I went to the AWP Conference in Seattle and made some new friends.
Penny & Owen.
We released the cover for our first 2023 release coming this Fall! MOSAIC by Catherine McCarthy. Details and pre-orders HERE
I’ve been listening to older music lately, a classic alt-rock station on iTunes. It’s fucking fire. Talking Heads and Mazzy Star and the Dead Kennedys…ugh
But my favorite songs right now are:
The Hardest Button to Button by The White Stripes
Mermaids by Florence + The Machine
Hunger of the Pine by Alt-J
Here I Am (Come And Take Me) UB40
Watching SUCCESSION Season 4 and that Elephant documentary on Hulu and that fucking Ted Lasso, which…I’m going to do a post about Ted Lasso. The appeal is confusing to me and I’m a fan too so don’t get your undies in a knot, it’s just that the show shouldn’t work, but it does…we’ll talk about it.
Anyhoodles, that’s it. Pre-Order my book anywhere books are sold or HERE
I love the idea of waking up and reading. I’ve been trying to slow down my mornings. Drinking coffee. Walking my dogs. Writing. But adding in 30 minutes of reading sounds glorious!
